Amana NTW4516 top-load washer: Fill, drain, and spin symptoms

Record Amana NTW4516 fill, agitator, drain, lid, and spin observations before choosing a top-load washer repair path.

By 8 min read

A wet load sitting in a full tub doesn’t tell you much by itself. The NTW4516 runs fill, agitation with its dual-action agitator, drain, and spin in order, with a lid signal partway through, and a stall in any one of those stages looks about the same from the laundry room. So “it will not work” isn’t really a symptom. The order things happened in is.

Use the current Amana owner guide for the complete suffix. The appliance services hub explains the general path to diagnosis and a written estimate.

Start with the selected cycle

Write down the cycle, water level, temperature, options, detergent, and load type. Note if water entered, the agitator moved, the washer paused, the tub drained, and the basket spun. A single bulky item or a load wrapped around the agitator can change the result.

The NTW4516 family includes normal, drain and spin, rinse, and other cycle functions on its published product information. Exact options can vary by suffix. Use the current manual rather than assuming a control label from another Amana model.

Do not restart repeatedly before saving the first sequence. Load position, water level, and a partial drain can change the next attempt.

Check the lid safely

Record whether the lid closes, whether the indicator responds, and whether the machine stops during a normal pause. Do not hold the lid switch closed, insert an object into the latch, or reach into the tub while it moves.

The current product information lists a late lid-lock feature on relevant NTW4516 variants. Treat a lock light or lid behavior as a clue. It does not prove that the lid switch or control has failed.

If the lid does not align, look for a visible object or a recent move. Do not adjust hinges, remove the top panel, or force the lid.

Separate fill and drain symptoms

Did water come in at full speed, at a trickle, or not at all? Then say what happened at the other end: tub still full, a pump sound with nothing moving, water reaching the standpipe. Look at the hoses only where you can already see them, without loosening a connection or moving the machine.

If water is near an outlet, keep clear. Do not touch a wet plug, reach into the pump, or open the cabinet. Use the current owner guide for any normal drain procedure and follow it once only if it applies to the exact model.

The FAQ explains the estimate process. It cannot identify a valve, pump, motor, lid switch, belt, or control from a fill or drain symptom.

Observe wash action and spin

Here you’re watching four things: whether the agitator moves, whether the basket turns, whether the load redistributes, and whether there’s a sound that wasn’t there before. Note if it happens with an empty tub, a small load, or a full one. Don’t reach into a moving basket, and don’t add water to rebalance it.

Look at the washer from outside for unusual movement or a new gap from the wall. Do not level the machine or open the base based on one cycle. Include installation, relocation, or flooring changes.

Keep the exact model record

Photograph the complete model label from the normal rear or lid area. Do not move a heavy washer or remove a panel to reach it. The exact suffix controls the current cycle, lid, drain, and care instructions.

The brands hub offers general model context. Do not use a generic code chart or service-mode test as a homeowner shortcut.

What a technician should test

Testing may include water supply, fill valves, lid signal, drain hose and pump, agitator and basket movement, drive system, suspension, wiring, and controls. The first test should follow the stage where the machine stopped.

Keep the model, cycle, load, water level, lid state, fill and drain result, movement, sounds, lights, and last normal cycle together. Leave clear access without moving the washer.

Prepare the visit

Keep the load, detergent, and selected settings as they were when the symptom appeared if doing so is safe. A technician can learn more from the actual interrupted sequence than from a tub that has been emptied, reloaded, and run through several different cycles. If water remains, do not scoop it out through an opening that is not described in the current manual.

Take a photo of the control panel and model label. Add one sentence about what the washer did first, what it did next, and where it stopped. Mention a recent hose change, move, leak, power event, or floor work. Do not disconnect the washer or pull it from a tight space just to make access easier.

If the washer is safe to use but the problem is intermittent, record the cycle and load each time. If the lid, water, or electrical condition is unsafe, leave the machine off and say that clearly in the request.

Bring the record to service

Leave the washer where it stands and the lid closed once you’ve finished looking. If the load is still inside, don’t reach in after a suspected obstruction. What’s worth adding to the record at this point is the final water level, where the load ended up, and any light or sound that showed up after the stop.

All of that is a safer starting point for a technician than a replacement part picked out of a search result.

Estimate and next step

There is no repair price by phone; diagnose first, then quote. A written estimate comes after diagnosis and before repair work. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair.

Use the contact page to send the full suffix and sequence. Keep your hands out of the tub, don’t bypass the lid, and let the testing decide what gets replaced.

FAQ

Common questions.

Why does an Amana NTW4516 stop before spin?
Record the load, cycle, lid response, drain result, basket movement, and any light or message. A balance, lid, drain, drive, or control condition may stop the sequence.
Can I bypass the NTW4516 lid lock?
No. Do not hold the lid switch closed or reach into a moving basket. Observe from outside and follow only the current owner guide's normal steps.
What should I record before Amana washer service?
Send the full model suffix, load, cycle, water level, fill and drain behavior, agitator action, lid state, spin result, and any recent move or power event.
