Bosch Dishwasher Not Draining: Safe Checks Before Parts

Look at the water level first

A shallow amount of clean water around the filter can be part of the normal sump level. Dirty water standing above the filter after a finished cycle is different. Photograph the level before changing anything, especially if the display also shows a message.

Also note when the water appears. Water left after the wash points in a different direction from sink water returning to the tub later. If the dishwasher drained and the level rose again after the sink or disposal was used, keep that timing with your notes. It helps separate a machine that never pumped out from a shared drain path that let water come back.

Clean and reseat the filter

Turn the dishwasher off. Remove the lower rack and follow the model’s owner guide for the filter. Rinse away food and grease with a soft brush, then lock the filter back into its seated position. Do not reach into the pump opening or use a knife to probe below the filter.

Look for ordinary debris on the filter, not for a part to blame. A label, food film, or small piece of glass can reduce flow. Keep your hands clear of anything sharp and do not run the machine with the filter loose. After it is clean and fully locked, one normal cycle is enough to compare the result. Repeated drain attempts can hide the original water level and make the sequence harder to understand.

Check the sink-side path

Look under the sink for a sharply kinked drain hose. If the sink has an air gap, remove only its normal owner-cleanable cap and clear visible debris. Run the garbage disposal before another normal cycle. A newly installed disposal also needs its dishwasher inlet opened during installation; a closed inlet blocks the drain completely.

Do not disconnect the hose to prove a clog. A hose can hold dirty water, and a loose connection can leak into the cabinet. Record whether the hose rises before reaching the sink connection, whether the disposal was recently replaced, and whether water comes out of the air gap during the drain portion of the cycle. Those observations are safer and more useful than opening the plumbing.

Separate a blocked path from a machine fault

If the filter is clear and the sink-side path looks normal, the remaining possibilities move inside the dishwasher. A drain pump can be obstructed or fail electrically. A check path can stick. Wiring, sensing, or the control sequence can also prevent a proper drain. The same pool of water can result from more than one of those causes, so standing water alone is not a reason to order a pump.

Save the model number, the exact display message, the cycle that was running, and a photo of the water level. Mention whether the pump made its normal sound, a different sound, or no sound. That is the useful handoff for diagnosis.

Stop at the cabinet line

Do not pull the dishwasher, disconnect the hose, open the pump, or test wiring from this guide. Water near an outlet, a burning smell, or a repeated breaker trip means the machine should remain off.

A leak is also a stop condition. Shut off the dishwasher supply if it can be reached safely, keep clear of wet electrical parts, and do not run another cycle simply to reproduce the symptom. Filter cleaning and a visual sink-side check are owner tasks. Pump access, live testing, and moving a built-in machine are not.
