True GDM-12 display cooler not cooling in Daly City
Problem: An ice cream shop in Daly City called about their drink cooler, a Coca-Cola branded True GDM-12 single glass door merchandiser. It had stopped holding temperature, and the little energy controller on the front grille was flashing PF 1 instead of showing how cold the case was. For a shop that sells bottled drinks all day, a warm cooler is lost sales sitting right at the register.
Diagnostics: Our technician pulled the front grille to get at the condensing unit. The answer was right there. The condenser coil was packed solid, its fins buried under a grey mat of dust and lint so thick the coil looked like felt. A merchandiser like this pulls its cooling air through a grille at floor level, and in a busy shop that means it inhales everything the room drops: dust, paper fibers, sugar, all of it. Once the coil plugs up, the system cannot dump heat, the compressor runs hot, and the case slowly loses the fight.
Solution: He cleaned the condenser coil back to bare fins, cleared the dust out of the compartment around the compressor and drain pan, put the grille back on, and let the cooler run to pull the case down.
Result: The cooler is back at work, stocked shelf to shelf and holding drinks cold where customers can grab them. Commercial display units earn their keep in the worst spot in the building for airflow, so a condenser cleaning on a regular schedule is much cheaper than a dead compressor in the middle of a summer weekend.
