This tends to show up on older units that have simply put in the years, and it sounds like a steady whir, hum, or grind that gets louder over time rather than an intermittent catch. The fix is replacing the motor. We check the fan for free rotation and play in the shaft to confirm the bearings are gone before we replace it.
Condenser fan or debris near the compressor. If the noise comes from the back near the compressor rather than inside, it can be the condenser fan blade catching on debris, or a fan motor at the back wearing out. We clear the coil and the fan path and check the motor, since a buzz or rattle from the bottom rear is a different fix than the evaporator fan inside the freezer.
