When the defrost system is not keeping up, ice builds up where it should not behind the freezer wall, and the evaporator fan blade catches on it. That contact is the rattle or grinding you are hearing. It is a defrost problem showing up as noise, and it is very fixable. We pull the back panel, confirm the ice build-up against the fan, and test the defrost heater and thermostat to find why the frost is not clearing.
- Worn fan motor bearings. Less often, the noise is an aging fan motor whose bearings have worn out. This tends to show up on older units that have simply put in the years, and it sounds like a steady whir, hum, or grind that gets louder over time rather than an intermittent catch. The fix is replacing the motor. We check the fan for free rotation and play in the shaft to confirm the bearings are gone before we replace it.
