What we do. What we fix.

What breaks and what it costs

A range hood, some folks call it the oven hood or the vent, is a simple machine that fails in four predictable ways. A fan that won’t spin. A blower that grinds or roars. Lights that quit. A touch panel that goes dark after years of grease. We fix all four on wall-mount, island, and under-cabinet hoods across the Bay Area, on GE, Bosch, Broan, Whirlpool, Zephyr, and Z-Line, plus the pro inserts and liners.

Rough numbers, before the visit tells the real story: a run capacitor or a burned-out lamp is usually the cheapest fix. A speed or control board runs more once you add the part. A full blower-motor assembly is the top of the range, and it’s the fix we condemn last, not first. It’s $75 to come out and find the fault with a meter, credited to the repair, then a written repair-or-replace call.

The reason we lead with the meter matters. A hood fan that won’t start is a tired run capacitor or a seized bearing far more often than a dead motor. We test the cap and spin the wheel by hand before anyone orders a blower. Starting at the expensive part costs you money, so we don’t.

The four failures we see most

Fan dead on every speed. Usually the run capacitor or the speed board, not the motor. We meter the cap, check for line voltage at the board output, and only condemn the blower if it reads open or the bearings are locked. Common Zephyr and Z-Line boards ride on the truck.

Blower loud, rattling, or humming. Dry motor bearings, or a grease-caked wheel thrown out of balance. We pull the wheel, clean or replace it, and re-seat. A balanced wheel on good bearings runs quiet again without a whole new motor.

Stuck on one speed. The speed control or touch board has lost its taps. We bench-test the board and swap only the failed stage where the design allows it.

Touch panel gone dark. GE, Bosch, and Z-Line hoods all fail here from grease creeping in at the seam. We clean, re-seal, and only replace the board if the touch sensors test dead.

Lights out. Halogen pucks burn out and can take the socket with them. LED hoods usually drop the driver, not the strip. We carry both and confirm which before ordering.

Weak pull, kitchen stays smoky. Nine times out of ten it’s grease-clogged baffle or mesh filters, a backdraft damper stuck shut, or a crushed duct run. We clean the filters, free the damper, and check the duct path before touching the motor.

Repair or replace

Most hoods are worth fixing. The metal shell outlasts the electronics by decades, so a board, a cap, or a lamp brings a good hood back for a fraction of a replacement plus new ductwork. Where it stops paying off is a discontinued unit with a dead motor and no board available, or a builder-grade hood so cheap the part costs more than a new one. We’ll tell you which you’ve got.
