Sub-Zero in El Cerrito kitchens.

Most of El Cerrito is long-held family homes with original kitchens, the ranches and split-levels off Moeser Lane and Barrett Avenue that haven't seen a full remodel since they were built in the 1940s through the 1960s. Sub-Zero isn't in those kitchens. It shows up on the view lots above the fog line, where a remodel over the last decade or two put in a full-size column or Classic built-in behind custom panels, usually next to a Wolf or Thermador range. Those hillside properties get more sun and more room than the flats, which is part of why the bigger built-in kitchens land up there. The bungalow flats near San Pablo Avenue almost never run Sub-Zero.

On the built-ins we see, which run anywhere from 10 to 20 years old, the two things that come up most are condenser coils caking up and the dispenser quitting. On the Classic 36 and 48 inch models, air pulls across the condenser coil, and that coil clogs quickly once a cabinet panel restricts airflow to the grille. The unit runs hotter, the compressor cycles longer than it should, and the fresh-food compartment starts creeping up in temperature. On older built-in units, the ice side of the dispenser quits even though water still comes out fine. Before ordering a part, we check the harness and the switch to make sure the control board is actually the culprit.

What we close on the truck.

Condenser coil cleaning and fan-motor swap. Classic 36 and 48 inch units in these hillside remodels after a blocked grille. The unit comes out, we brush and vacuum the coil, and we check the fan bearings for wear.
Dispenser control on older built-ins. Ice dead, water fine, lights normal, a pattern we see on the built-ins that went into these view-lot kitchens ten or twenty years back. New boards for this part are frequently backordered, but we can usually get one rebuilt. We verify before ordering.
Sealed-system leak on built-in units. Slow one-side warming on a column tucked behind custom panels above the fog line. That means recovering the refrigerant, fixing the leak, weighing in a new charge, and holding a vacuum for 24 hours to make sure it doesn't drop.
Door gasket and hinge service. Magnetic seal breaks on a hillside unit that's been in daily use for a decade or more and the compressor runs constantly. The fix is a new gasket paired with a cartridge adjustment so the door seals properly again.
