One week fine, the next week frosted. I test the board's defrost cycle directly rather than swapping parts on suspicion.
Condenser fan motor seizing on side-by-side units. Down at the bottom rear of a 106 side-by-side, the condenser fan collects dust and pet hair until the motor seizes. The compressor then overheats and cycles off, and the fridge warms in waves. The fix is a fan motor and a proper cleaning of the coil, and the difference in run temperature is immediate.
Start relay and overload failures on older top-freezers. A Kenmore that clicks every few minutes but never starts usually has a failed start relay on the compressor. On the older Newark-era units this is a ten dollar part failing, not the compressor itself. I verify the compressor windings first, so you never pay for a relay on a compressor that is already gone.
