Kenmore never built a refrigerator. Sears put its name on units made by someone else. The Sears stores are mostly gone now, but the Kenmore name got licensed out, and you can still buy new Kenmore fridges at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Amazon. That means the first move on any Kenmore call is to read the model number and find out who actually made yours, because that decides the parts, the failure pattern, and the price.

The number does the telling. A model starting 795 is an LG build. A 106 is Whirlpool. That one detail changes the whole conversation. LG-built Kenmores inherit LG’s compressor and defrost trouble, so a fridge that runs but slowly warms both sides usually points at the sealed system. Whirlpool-built Kenmores are the tougher of the two, and the common no-cool cause there is the defrost heater or the adaptive defrost control icing over the coil.

On some LG-built Elite french-door units you’ll get one compartment warm while the other holds perfect. That’s usually a stuck diverter valve, not a fan. We force each side and watch coil temps to be sure, because a $60 valve and a diagnosis-by-replacement are very different bills.

The $99 diagnostic is flat and covers the full workup, credited to the repair. We diagnose the fault on site, then provide a written repair estimate before any work starts. The part price swings hard depending on whether it’s an LG or a Whirlpool build and whether the piece is even still made.

Repair or replace

Here is the honest part. Most Kenmores on the road are old, and age is not the only thing we weigh. Value matters too. If the maker still sells the part, the rest of the fridge is sound, and the unit was worth real money new, repair can add more good years. If you are facing a compressor on a fifteen-year-old LG-built unit, or the fridge was a basic sub-$1,000 model to start with, we may recommend putting the money toward a new one instead.
