Zephyr in San Bruno
Zephyr in San Bruno kitchens.
San Bruno's housing stock, Rollingwood, Portola Highlands, Crestmoor, mostly went up between the 1940s and the 1960s, back when a kitchen exhaust fan was rare and a proper range hood was rarer still. The Zephyr wall hoods and inserts I see here are almost always a remodel addition, cut into a wall or a ceiling joist bay that was never laid out for the duct run, so the path outside often has a tight bend or two instead of a straight shot.
Those bends add resistance the blower has to work against every time it runs, and over the years that shows up as motor wear a little earlier than a straight-run install would see. Being close to SFO does not change any of that. What it does mean is I am used to working around whatever access a 1950s remodel left behind, tight joist bays and shallow attic clearance included.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Blower motor wear from tight duct routing. Retrofit ducting through 1950s and 60s framing often has one or two tight bends, and that added resistance is what pushes blower bearing wear ahead of schedule compared to a straight run.
- Speed control board. A hood stuck on one fan speed, or one that will not shut off, usually points to the control board rather than the motor itself. I test both before quoting.
- Capacitive touch control panel. These 1950s remodel hoods often share a circuit with fixtures added in the same job, and a flickering or dead panel sometimes traces to that shared wiring before it traces to the board itself. I check the circuit, then the board and harness.
- LED lighting section. On a hood tied into an existing dimmer switch from the remodel, a section going dark is more often a mismatch between the dimmer and the LED driver than a failed strip. I check the switch before I touch the hood.

FAQ
Zephyr in San Bruno questions, answered.
-
How fast can you get to San Bruno for a Zephyr repair?
San Bruno falls inside our Peninsula coverage, since the technician who runs this territory is based in San Mateo County rather than San Ramon. I still will not promise same-day on every call, but the window tends to hold better when the drive is short. -
Our duct run has a couple of tight bends from an old remodel. Does that make repairs harder?
It changes what fails more than it changes the repair itself. Tight bends wear blower bearings out earlier, so that is usually the first thing I check on a San Bruno call, along with the control board. -
Do you charge just to look at it?
Same $99 diagnostic as everywhere else we work, credited toward the repair. I write the part number and the price down before I touch anything.
