El Cerrito is one ZIP for us, 94530, a hillside city wedged between Richmond and Albany in Contra Costa County. The housing splits two ways. Up the hill off Moeser Lane and Barrett Avenue toward the Wildcat Canyon ridge sit 1940s to 1960s ranches and split-levels, plenty of them held by the same family for decades with kitchens that haven’t been touched since the original build. Down in the flats near San Pablo Avenue the stock is stucco bungalows on smaller lots. Either way the fridges, ranges, washers, and dryers running in these kitchens are mainstream: GE, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag.

Original kitchens mean older machines, and older machines mean the same failures repeat. A GE or Whirlpool top-loader with a worn motor coupler or a lid switch that stopped registering. A dryer that runs but doesn’t heat, usually the element or the thermal fuse gone. A Samsung or LG fridge with the fresh food side climbing while the freezer stays cold, evap fan or defrost heater. I see it enough on these hill streets that I usually know which part to bring before I’ve opened the panel.

The view lots above the fog line get remodeled more than the flats do, and that pulls in a smaller share of built-in work. It’s a minority of the calls up here, not the rule. Down along San Pablo Avenue the small restaurants, bakeries, and markets run their own ice machines and reach-ins.
