Portola Valley is a quiet town in the oak and redwood hills off Alpine Road and Portola Road, with large custom homes on wooded acreage, mid-century modern houses in the Ladera-adjacent pockets, and ranch properties further out toward Skyline. Septic and well setups exist on the outer roads too, which matters more for plumbing than appliances, but well water hardness does show up as scale inside dishwashers and icemakers.

- GSS side-by-side icing over every few weeks. Frost builds on the evaporator when the defrost heater or thermostat gives out, and eventually the fresh food side goes warm even though the freezer still runs cold. After a power shutoff or an outage, people sometimes blame the outage for a problem that was actually the defrost system failing on its own timeline. I replace the heater and thermostat as a pair and check the defrost cycle before I leave.
- GFW front-load washer won't drain. A loaded pump filter or a failed pump throws the same drain fault. In the older mid-century houses out here the washer is often in a small closet with limited clearance, so I check the standpipe and door boot for a slow leak at the same time I'm in there for the drain issue.
- Electric range burner dead or stuck on high. The infinite switch behind the knob on GE JB ranges fails more than the element does. Stuck on high is almost always the switch. Dead cold I test at the element first since it could be either part. Both are inexpensive and I keep common JB elements on the truck.

We're on well water. Does that affect our GE appliances?
It can. Hard well water leaves scale inside dishwashers and icemakers faster than municipal water does, and that scale is a common cause of an icemaker that slows down or a dishwasher that stops cleaning well. I check for it during the diagnostic. -
Should we worry about our fridge during a PG&E shutoff?
A closed fridge holds temperature for several hours and a full freezer longer than that, so a short outage usually isn't a problem. If your unit already runs warm during normal power, an outage will expose that faster, and that's a separate issue worth fixing regardless.
