Castro Valley is ranch house country, most of it built in the 1950s and 60s, and a surprising number of those homes still have the original wet bar in the family room. When the bar got updated, a U-Line undercounter ice maker was the usual choice, and I meet fifteen and twenty year old units here every month. Age alone is not a death sentence for these machines. Parts are still available for most of them, and I would rather quote a repair than push a replacement that does not fit the opening.

Up in the hills off Redwood Road and Crow Canyon the homes are bigger and the units are newer, often a Wine Captain in a kitchen island. Down in the flats near the village I see more rentals and more beverage centers that have been moved from house to house, which brings its own problems, mostly leveling and drain issues nobody addressed at the last move.

Every fridge with a dispenser or ice maker has a water inlet valve. The fittings can leak under the cabinet, or the solenoid fails and the dispenser and ice maker stop getting water.

Ice bin overfills and jams the cutter. The bin thermistor tells the unit the bin is full. When it drifts, the machine keeps making ice until cubes pack against the cutter grid and stall it. On older wet bar units in Castro Valley this is a common find. The thermistor is a modest part, and replacing it beats melting out a jammed bin every two weeks.
Compressor clicks but never starts. A click every few minutes with no cooling is usually the start relay and overload on the compressor, not the compressor itself. On 60s-era wet bars the outlet wiring can add voltage drop that kills relays early. We replace the relay, check voltage at the receptacle, and confirm the compressor pulls normal amps before we leave.
Hollow, slow-forming cubes. When the water inlet valve screens clog with mineral, the fill gets weak and cubes come out thin or hollow. Castro Valley water is hard enough to do this in a few years. We clean or replace the valve, flush the line, and if there is no inline filter I will suggest adding one so the fix lasts.
